The Founder

As there is much controversy around the hCG diet, we hope to shed some light on the founder.

You’ll see he’s far from a quack, but actually a highly respected, and awarded medical specialist. But you’ll never see mention of this in any article that suggest the diet is a fraud.

The diet protocol originated through experiences in the early career of Dr. Albert Theodore William Simeons.

We’ve researched him thoroughly and note there’s also a lot of misinformation about him on the internet. For a more complete bio, please visit our Dr. Simeons page.

Nonetheless, Dr. Simeons was practicing medicine in India beginning in 1931. He worked in camps and in the poorest areas.

Poverty and a severe shortage of food was the norm and he was curious how malnourished pregnant mothers could give birth to healthy, full term babies.

Discovery of hCG

It was then that he discovered the role of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG,) a hormone produced in the placenta of pregnant females.

Levels of hCG were quite elevated in pregnant women.

As much as 1,000,000 units can be produced daily!

HCG triggers the hypothalamus to release stored body fat (adipose) which can in turn provide the body as many as 2,500 calories per day.

The "Fat Boys"

During his time in India, he was also working with overweight, prepubescent adolescent boys.

These young males had had an unusual endocrine disorder and also suffered from a lack of testosterone, a hormone produced in the testes.

In his writings, Dr. Simeons referred to these young men as “The Fat Boys.”

He always thought that obesity was the result of overeating, not the cause.

With this in mind, he began to figure out what the human body was doing or lacking in that created excessive weight loss.

The hCG Diet Origin

Soon, Dr. Simeons learned how to isolate hCG from the urine of pregnant females.

He began to inject the isolated hCG into the adolescent boys and putting them on a 500 calorie a day diet.

The hCG injections and low calorie diet continued for 28 days. The diet protocols included restrictions on a variety of foods.

The boys began losing weight almost immediately (as much as a pound a day) and the early days of the hCG diet began to take shape.

The Formative Years

Through the rest of the 1930’s and 40’s, Dr. Simeons kept the diet going and tweaking it along the way.

Royalty and the rich sound found out, as did Hollywood movie stars!

The term “The HCG diet” was born amongst this group who could afford to travel to see Dr. Simeons.

In 1949, he relocated his with and three children to Rome, Italy. He continued his work on the diet when he moved there.

By now, he’d treated thousands of people, both in India and now Italy, with great success.

News of the diet spread fast and Dr. Simeons was being contacted from other doctors all over the world.

They had overweight patients that they wanted to help, but needed information on the diet.

By 1954, he couldn’t keep up with the demand for information.

He just didn’t have time to respond to all the questions while looking after patients at the same time.

It was then he wrote his book “Pounds And Inches: A New Approach to Obesity” simply to get the information out to other doctors so he could spend his time looking after people.

The book took off and the world started to become aware of the hCG diet for weight loss!

The Lull Period

The diet continued with much success into the late 1960’s.

With the increase of notoriety the protocol began to suffer from an increase of non-believers in the medical community.

Then in 1970, Dr. Simeons passed away.

The founder of the dieter was no longer around to defend his findings and news of the diet began to taper off.

Remember, this is long before the access to information we now enjoy through the internet, social media etc.

It remained in use, but access to hCG was hard to find and the vast majority of Doctors around the world were not willing or not able to write an “off label” prescription for hCG.

The Resurgence

On April 1st, 2007, Kevin Trudeau released his book titled “The Weight Loss Cure “They” Don’t Want You To Know About.”

It soon found its way to Best Seller status!

Mr. Trudeau had previously written (and sold with great success) two other best sellers, “Natural Cures “They” Don’t Want You To Know About” and “More Natural Cures Revealed: Previously Censored Brand Name Products That Cure Disease”

The Weight Loss Cure was a runaway success and TV talk shows began interviewing Kevin on live broadcasts.

The news was out and there was a huge resurgence of the hCG diet!

More doctors began investigating and even trying the diet themselves with successful results.

Existing weight loss clinics began offering the hCG protocol and new “hCG specific” weight loss clinics began popping up everywhere!

The hCG Diet Today

As the diet took off, so did the variations and the proliferation of scam websites selling fake hCG.

Doctors (who’d never tried the product) began to publically denounce it as a fake fad.

Home businesses popped up selling hCG drops, a variation of hCG injections as they could not access authentic, pharmaceutical grade hCG.

There was so much controversy created that The US Food And Drug Administration (The FDA) stepped in and attempted to halt all sales of hCG for “off label” (using and FDA approved product for any ailment it was not legally approved for) usage.

HCG is FDA approved only for use as a treatment for female infertility and as a hormone treatment in men.

In the end, The FDA was successful in shutting down business claiming to sell hCG drops and numerous websites selling fake hCG powder.

Clinics and doctors continued to prescribe (and still do to this day) hCG as an aid to weight loss.

The hCG diet has gone through quiet the journey, but almost 100 years later, remains as one of the most successful diets ever!
